The High Price of Data-Intensive Apps >
With the skyrocketing popularity of data-intensive apps and the introduction of 4G LTE, data package costs are still a monthly worry for many. With faster connection speeds available, it isn’t hard to rack up a substantial overage charge on your monthly phone bill.
This past summer, AT&T offered up a unique solution to the problem: make app developers foot the data bill. AT&T would implement a “toll-free calling” service for mobile apps, meaning that the app service provider would foot the connection cost instead of the user. AT&T’s Network and Technology head John Donovan says already he has 800 apps on board, all of which would be available without any data usage. Donovan hopes to have the service on the market by 2013.
